Public Defender's Statement on Prisoner’s Death at VivaMedi Clinic

The media is reporting information about the death of a prisoner at the VivaMedi Clinic. The Public Defender's Office will conduct a full examination of the case to establish and assess the causes of death.

We would like to remind the public that the fact of the prisoner's admission to the clinic with serious injuries became public on January 29, 2025. The Public Defender's Office was involved in examining the case.

A representative of the Public Defender visited the clinic to verify the prisoner's condition and interview the medical staff. In addition, in order to obtain the necessary information, the Public Defender's representative met with prisoners and representatives of the administration of the penitentiary institution, from which the injured defendant was transferred to the clinic. Unfortunately, it was not possible to interview the prisoner personally due to his health condition.

The Public Defender's Office examined the relevant information and video recordings of the corridor near the cell. It was found that there was no video surveillance in the cell itself. The prisoner's medical records show multiple injuries. It is necessary for the investigation and forensic medical examination to provide comprehensive answers to questions about their origin.

The Public Defender's Office, within the scope of its authority, will continue to fully study the case and communicate with investigative agencies in order to monitor the investigation.
